Evidence is presented suggesting that the corpus luteum (CL) may undergo regression in the presence of a viable embryo, after the start of a rapid elongation of the trophoblast. The ultrastructure of a regressing CL from a nonpregnant heifer 18 days after mating was compared with that of a regressing CL from a nonpregnant heifer and of a normal CL from a pregnant heifer, both also at 18 days after mating. The regressing CL from the pregnant heifer resembled morphologically the regressing CL from the nonpregnant heifer (lipoid materials and swollen mitochondria in the lutein cells).
