Poorly differentiated pancreatic adenocarcinoma in a chicken

A severely emaciated, 2-year-old local breed hen with a 2-month history of weight loss was killed. PM examination showed a markedly narrowed lumen in many parts of the intestine, an enlarged pancreas with a poorly defined irregular surface and nodular growths on the mesentery and serosal surface of the intestines. The ovary and oviduct were atrophied. Microscopically neoplastic tissue identified as a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was seen in the pancreas, mesentery and the wall of the small intestine. There was marked fibroplasia in areas adjacent to the neoplastic tissue. The limited gross lesions and the histological pattern of the neoplastic tissue indicated that the neoplasm originated from the exocrine pancreas.
