A study of infective aetiology of chronic diarrhoea in children in Amritsar

Faecal samples were examined in Amritsar, India, from 150 children who were younger than 3 years of age and had chronic diarrhoea. Of these, 58.7% had various enteropathogens present. Cryptosporidium oocysts, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia [G. duodenalis] were detected in 1.3%, 2% and 4% of cases, respectively. Candida albicans was isolated from 1.3% of the children. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (21.4%). Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri and Campylobacter were identified in 21.4%, 8.6%, 4% and 0.7% of cases, respectively.
