Transmission of Sarcoptes scabiei from animal to man and its control

An outbreak of sarcoptic mange in domestic animals (64 goats, 8 cattle, 5 sheep and 2 dogs) spreading to man (42 individuals) was observed in the adjacent villages of Fewgram and Nurpur in the district of Birbhum, West Bengal, India, from mid-November to mid-December 1991. Nineteen goats and one calf who did not receive any treatment died of mange. All infested animals were cured with external application of deltamethrin and triazapentadiene. Human cases were treated successfully with 2% benzene hexachloride [HCH].
