The paradigm issues in nursing need to be sorted out and the focus of nursing as a professional discipline addressed. The challenge is to identify and to agree on the central question and to clarify scientific values and methods. Evidence of a paradigm shift exists in nursing. Johnson's bibliometric analysis of nursing literature since 1966 depicts a shift from a scientific medical model to a model based on holism. Sarter's analysis of four contemporary nursing theories reveals commonly shared themes, emphasizing holism, process, and self-transcendence.I6 She suggests that it represents an emerging paradigm. The shift perhaps has not been as revolutionary as Kuhn would have predicted. A recent headline in the Brain/Mind Bulletin is apropos, has various advantages and disadvantages, depending on individual program needs.
