Tubal lesions subsequent to sterilization and their relation to fertility after attempts at reversal

26 sterilized patients were investigated at the time of reversal operation to assess the morphologic features of the mucosa of the fallopian tubes after sterilization. These morphologic findings were compared with those of tubal specimens taken from women undergoing hysterectomy for other indications. Sterilization technique was either catgut ligature, electrocoagulation, or Falope ring. Under scanning electron microscopy, one-half of the sterilized tubes had abnormalities of tubal mucosa which included loss of mucosal folds, deciliation, and polyposis. These conditions become more severe with time; hence, reversal deciliation, and polyposis. These conditions become more severe with time; hence, reversal procedures have greater chance of success when performed closer to time of sterilization.
