After defining 'natural' lactation as that in a confident mother who breast feeds her infant in a relaxed way on demand and whose lactation may last 1-2 yr, some results are presented of surveys among different Indian and African tribes on the relationships between birth interval and natural lactation and postpartum amenorrhea and lactation, and the factors which may influence these relationships.
