Hepatitis C, the leading cause of chronic hepatitis in the United States, is difficult to diagnose and treat. It is vital that medical-surgical nurses understand the historical background and current information regarding prevention of hepatitis C, serological diagnosis, epidemiology and transmission, sequelae, and treatment. Issues of safety in the workplace and risks of transfusion must also be clearly understood to protect health care workers and patients receiving transfusions from infection.
