Udder health was investigated in 5 small and middle sized dairy herds . Indices for the evaluation of udder health were calculated and listed with normal range indices. The importance of somatic cell count of bulk-milk, individual cow somatic cell counts and calculated mean somatic cell counts of the herds for the control of udder health are discussed. It is concluded that together with microbiological findings from mastitic milk these data give a good indication of the mastitis situation in a given herd, and that collecting and analysing data with a herd health computer program are valuable tools in managing udder health in the small dairy herd.
