The use of a metabolic profile test in dairy herds

A metabolic profile test, to screen various blood parameters in dairy herds, is described. For the assessment, a herd sample of 21 cows is selected which may be divided into 3 groups, as follows: (i) 7 dry cows, (ii) 7 cows with medium milk yield and (iii) 7 high-yielding cows. Blood sampling, initially, was carried out on 2400 cows in 13 herds to establish 'normal' values and confidence limits. The test was then extended to include 47 herds.
