The thyroid glands of 1020 adult Taiwanese were palpated and thyroid ultrasonography was performed. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was undertaken in nodular goitre with or without ultrasound guidance, depending on whether or not the thyroid nodules were easily located by palpation. Adult goitre prevalence was 19.4% in males, 33.6% in females and 25% in total. 7 of 1020 adults had thyroid cancer diagnosed by aspiration cytology and confirmed by surgery and pathology. Of the 7 adults with thyroid cancer, one did not have a palpable goitre.
