West Nile virus, or a virus antigenically very closely related to it, was isolated from females of Anopheles maculipennis Mg. collected in Beja, southern Portugal, in the summer of 1969. It has been named the Roxo strain. This is the first record of the isolation of an arbovirus from mosquitos in Portugal.
