The results are analysed of a baseline survey carried out in a rural area of Ghana in 1987 which was designed to find out perceptions of the health problems within the community, determine the levels of family planning knowledge and practice, and assess the socioeconomic status of the nine communities involved. The survey, which polled 564 households, has been subsequently used as a basis for implementing the Integrated Family Planning, Nutrition and Parasite-Control Project (IP) which, supported by the International Planned Parenthood Federation, is aimed at improving the poor health status of the population in rural areas where health personnel, facilities and equipment are in short supply.
