Paracoccidioidomycosis of the small intestine. Radiologic and anatomo clinical aspects of 125 cases

Complete roentgenographic study of the small intestine was made of 125 cases with blastomycosis. Group I included 38 patients without any intestinal symptoms. Roentgenographic examination was normal in 86.8% of these patients, while in the other five patients (13,12%), three showed increased intestinal motility and two had mild mucosal abnormalities (+). Group II comprised 87 patients with symptoms and signs of enteritis where 65% had functional alterations and 71.3% had varying morphologic alterations. Pathologic examination showed specific lesions due to P. brasiliensis in 13 patients (52%) affecting only the small bowel,and six cases (24%) involving the large intestine also. Infection of the large intestine only, in seven cases (28%) was not included in this study. Likewise, five patients with generalized blastomycosis, but with inespecific lesions were not considered in the 25 autopsied cases.
