Immunoglobulins, serum proteins & lactate dehydrogenase levels in workers exposed to cotton dust

Immunoglobulins, serum proteins, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and its isoenzymes were estimated in workers exposed to cotton dust in a textile mill. The workers included byssinotics (12), nonbyssinotics (45) and controls (50). IgG was significantly raised in both byssinotics and nonbyssinotics, while IgA increased (though not significantly) only in byssinotics. The total proteins and albumin were reduced significantly while ß and gamma globulin levels were increased in both the exposed groups. No significant change was observed in total lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), however, a significant rise In LDH, and decrease in LDH3 was observed in exposed groups. The significance and possible role of immune mechanism in byssinosis has been highlighted.
