An assessment of the impact of India Population Project, Uttar Pradesh on acceptance of family planning methods

In an attempt to assess the impact of the Indian Population Project on family planning performance, districts involved in the project were compared with nonproject districts both within and outside of the Division. Indices are based on performance per 1000 population, with performance defined by equivalent sterilizations, vasectomy operations, tubectomy operations, IUD insertions, and conventional contraceptive users, for the years 1974-79. Highlights of the findings: 1) The project districts did 80% better in equivalent sterilizations compared to matching districts within the Division, and 2 times better than those outside the Division. 2) Project districts had 2 times higher achievement in vasectomy compared to matching Division districts, and 50% higher achievement compared ot those outside. 3) Project districts and matching nonproject districts within the Division had similar achievement with tubectomies, but project districts did 60% better when compared with nonproject districts out of the Division. 4) No differences were found in IUD achievement, and little difference among users of conventional contraceptives.
