Association of leptospiral seroreactivity and breed with uveitis and blindness in horses: 372 cases (1986-1993)

Over 7 years, 130 cases of uveitis were diagnosed in a population of approximately 9500 horses (prevalence 1.4%). Of 112 horses with uveitis, 63 (56%) were seropositive for Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona, whereas only 23 of 260 (9%) horses without uveitis were seropositive. Seropositive horses were 13.2 times more likely to have uveitis than seronegative horses. In horses with uveitis, blindness in 1 or both eyes was 4.4 times more common in seropositive horses. Appaloosa breed was 8.3 times more likely to have uveitis than other breeds, and odds of blindness were 3.8 times greater in horses of Appaloosa breed with uveitis than in horses of other breeds with uveitis.
