Vitamin E was estimated in cord blood serum and in blood samples collected at 3 and 6 days old wherever possible from 106 neonates in hospital in Lucknow, India. Cord values were not significantly different in preterm and term infants but values were significantly lower in preterm infants with a gestational age of <=33 weeks than in preterm infants with longer gestation. There was a positive correlation between values and birth weight. Cord values were significantly higher in preterm and term infants with weights appropriate for gestational age than in those small for gestational age. In preterm and term infants, values at 3 days old were significantly higher than values in cord blood and there was a further significant increase at 6 days.
