Sevoflurane MAC in the elderly

Twenty four elderly surgical patients (mean age, 82 years) undergoing surgery were anesthetized with sevoflurane and oxygen. In these patients, the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) for sevoflurane was determined. The MAC of sevoflurane in the elderly was 1.22 +/- 0.09% (SE), and this value was found to be about 30% smaller than that of 40-50 year-old patients.
