Histological and histochemical studies of the features of the main pancreatic duct epithelium were carried out in dogs, cats, rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs, animals differing in their food specialization. The presence of mucosal epithelial barrier was demonstrated. The properties of the barrier significantly differ as a function of the type of digestion. Carnivores have the hist but its secretion contains only neutral glycoproteins. Plant-eating animals are characterized by the presence of mucous secretion isolated by goblets and intrinsic glands of the duct (in guinea pigs. This secretion possesses more pronounced protective properties caused by high concentrations of acid glycoproteins.
