The history of discovery and the progress of research into the relations between plant oestrogenic compounds in herbage legumes and fertility in animals grazing them was reviewed, with particular reference to the infertility syndrome known as clover disease in Australian sheep. The chemical nature and comparative activity and metabolism of plant oestrogens in different animals are discussed. The mechanism of action of plant oestrogens that become concentrated in blood plasma is considered, together with control measures including pasture management and immunotherapy.
