The effects of contraception upon lactation: analysis of urban data

The 794 Filipino women studied in Manila, Philippines gave birth in hospital in June and July 1973. Afterwards 534 of them used contraception including 71 who took pills and 293 who used an intrauterine device (IUD), during the 17 months of study. Mean and medium duration of lactation and breast feeding were significantly longer for women using contraceptives than for other women. Mean duration of lactation was 3 months for women taking pills, which may shorten lactation, 9 months for those with IUD and 7 months for those using other forms of contraception; differences were significant.
