Bile salt induced amoebae to shed their highly antigenic part in vitro. The shed material was used for the assessment of lymphokine release and detection of antibodies in 52 amoebic liver abscess cases. A highly significant increase was noted in the release of LMIF and antibody titres with the shed of bile salt-treated amoebae compared to whole amoebic lysate. The differences between means of the above two with regards to release of lymphokine and IHA titres were found to be highly significant at P lt 0.005; and lt 0.001 respectively. This shows the amoebic liver abscess cases had high degree of leukocyte sensitization primarily to surface shed of E. histolytica in vivo compared to whole amoebic lysate which has shown in in vitro studies.
