The onset of lactation was shown to induce scent-marking (by rubbing low-lying objects with a ventral scent gland) in some low-marking female Mongolian gerbils. Hormonal stimulation (testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone) increased the frequency of scent-marking in some females but in few males, and caused scent gland size to increase in both sexes regardless of marking behaviour changes.
