This year-by-year bibliography of medical journal articles on acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) traces the evolution of the epidemic from 1981-94. From 3-22 key readings are listed for each year, some of which refer specifically to the emergence of AIDS in Australia. The titles of the journal articles serve as markers of the emergence of the AIDS epidemic and the refinement of scientific understanding of the virus. The selections from the early 1980s focus on the recognition of a new immune deficiency in homosexual men and hemophiliacs. Subsequent selections record the steps that preceded the 1986 designation of the disease as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the emergence of a disease classification scheme. Articles from the late 1980s tend to focus on the clarification of risk factors and the exploration of treatments, while those from the early 1990s concern refinements in understanding of the pathogenesis of the virus. Finally, the 1994 contributions focus on the ethical issues surrounding vaccine trials in developing countries.
