The reaction between N-benzyloxycarbonyl pyroglutamic acid and 4-(p-nitrobenzyl)pyridine results in N-benzyl-4-(p-nitrobenzylidene)dihydropyridine, a blue dye suitable for the detection on TLC plates of urethane-protected pyroglutamic acids and peptides having N-terminal urethane-protected pyroglutamyl residues.
