The paper examines rural-urban inequalities in literacy and education in Andhra Pradesh, dealing mainly with elementary, primary and middle levels of education. Section (2) outlines the development of education in the state; Section (3) discusses the methodology of measurement of inequalities. The empirical details are presented in section (4). Section (5) attempts to explain the inequalities observed. Some general observations in section (6) show that there are extreme levels of inequalities in literacy and education between the urban and rural populations. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for the rural population to wake up, organize themselves and earn equality in literacy and education.
