This summary is one of a series containing the salient findings of the Country Reports No. 1 of the countries participating in the World Fertility Survey. The main conclusions of The Survey of Fertility in Thailand: Country Report No. 1 (Vols. I and II) are outlined, the emphasis being on the rural population since only 13% of the population is urban. Data are given concerning nuptiality and exposure to child-bearing, fertility, preferences concerning the number and sex of children, husbands' attitudes, knowledge and use of contraception, regional differentials, urban-rural differentials, and differentials by level of education. The majority of women favour 2 or 3 children. Fertility appears to have declined fairly rapidly since the mid-1960s, and about 40% of ever-married women have used at least one modern method of contraception.
