The paper analyses the reliability of 1981 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey (CPS) data. The focus of the analysis is to examine, indepth the reliability of the dual responses given by the same respondent under almost identical conditions. Dat for the analysis were taken from the 1981 CPS and the Quality Control Survey for the same. The results of the analysis suggest that there are rather wide gap between the findings of two surveys and in particular the family planning related data. The available evidence suggest that the discrepancies are mainly due to errors. The errors seem to be committed mostly by the respondents, but there are also evidence of interviewer error.
