A general nitrogen balance for tropical forests of Latin America is presented. Inputs include symbiotic and asymbiotic nitrogen fixation and bulk precipitation; outputs include ammonia volatilization, leaching, denitrification, erosion and burning. Approx. 14 kg N ha-1 yr-1 is lost via denitrification in the Amazon Basin and 6 kg N ha-1 yr-1 by leaching, while 20 kg N ha-1 yr-1 is gained by nitrogen fixation.
