Content and composition of the rat brain gangliosides in different forms of hypoxia were studied. A significant increase in the content of lipid-bound sialic acid was observed at the very early stages of hypoxia combined with hypercapnia and cooling. The level of gangliosides remained elevated throughout the exposure to hypoxia and returned to standard values as late as 48 hours after its discontinuation. Repeated exposure to hypoxia caused similar changes in the ganglioside levels in the rat brain. A statistically reliable increase in the level of these lipids was also observed in hemic hypoxia induced by sodium nitrite. Under the effects of hypoxia, changes were observed in the composition of individual gangliosides: the monosialoganglioside level decreased and polysialoganglioside level increased.
