Communications were studied between portal and systemic circulations in 26 normal adult cats, six of which were unoperated controls, while the portal trunks of the remaining 20 cats were partially ligated. Gradual occlusion of portal veins led to a dilation of the normally existing but very small anastomoses between the portal system and systemic veins. The anastomoses thus formed were classified into the portoprecaval and the portopostcaval communications.
