Influence of piperine on rifampicin blood levels in patients of pulmonary tuberculosis

The influence of piperine on rifampicin levels in 14 patients (7 males, 7 females) of pulmonary tuberculosis was studied. The patients were fed 450 mg of rifampicin and blood levels of the drug determined by UV Spectrophotometer 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 hours later. After five days rifampicin (450 mg) was coadministered with piperine (50 mg) and the blood levels of rifampicin were again monitored. A highly significant (P<0.01) increase in rifampicin plasma levels and area under the drug concentration versus time curve was noticed in both the sexes when piperine was coadministered, although there was variation in the t max. The sex dependant difference observed was statistically insignificant.
