Tonsillar tissue is one of the most common sites of infection. Antimicrobial therapy usually controls the infection quickly. Certain infectious processes of the upper air passages may cause obstruction of the airway. This is more likely to occur if there is marked edema or hypertrophy of the tissue. We present a case report of airway obstruction caused by hypertrophy and infection of the lingual tonsils and briefly discuss other infections in this region that may also cause upper airway obstruction
