A new type of chromosomal response to irradiation has been identified in root-tip cells of Crepis capillaris in which ring chromosomes "vest" or encircle other chromosomes or single chromatids. Dry C. capillaris seeds whose embryo cells were synchronous in Gl were exposed to gamma rays and transferred to 0.01% colchicine. The most usual form of "vesting" observed at metaphase involved two chromatid strands encircled by two pairs of rings.
