Guidelines on sexual activity and contraception, particularly for couples who have just had children, are formulated. Included is background information on which explains why there have been no such guidelines in the past and emphasizing the necessity of instruction. Data were taken from a survey conducted on a group of married Japanese males and females who had already had at least 1 child. Based on these data, a table was constructed showing the reasons given by both partners for postpartum sexual abstinence. These include: 1) the mother's response, 2) infection, 3) surgical reasons, 4) bleeding, or 5) uncleanliness. The reason given by the largest percentage of the men (30%) was the mother's response, whereas the women gave 1 of 2 primary answers, saying that sexual abstinence was mainly a result of the mother's response (35%) or of infection (35%). Another chart indicating the period of sexual abstinence after birth reveals that the majority of couples surveyed waited 7-8 weeks before resuming sexual activity (41.3% of those for whom it was the 1st child and 40% of those who had already had children). The importance of sexual activity for both husband and wife after birth is stressed and it is recommended that couples be given sufficient guidance and instruction about contraception after they have children.
