The use of enrofloxacin in the treatment of multiresistant or non-responding Gram negative infections in small animals is reported. 18 dogs and one cat with a range of infections in different body systems were treated orally with 5.0 mg/kg body weight enrofloxacin (Baytril) once daily or divided twice daily for a minimum of 10 days. The results confirmed the usefulness of enrofloxacin against a variety of severe chronic infections. The good results in infections with salmonella or pseudomonas were particularly important as these bacteria can be difficult to treat. No adverse reactions were observed during the study. Since many of the infecting microorganisms were only sensitive to enrofloxacin, the authors warn that care should be taken to avoid producing resistance with this antibiotic and they suggest that indiscriminate use should be avoided.
