Generating employment and income of the rural poor: a micro level study in Bangladesh

The study analyses the generation of employment and income of the rural poor at micro level, focusing on the situation in Bangladesh. It is found that there has been an increase in women's labour force participation rate and a decrease in their unemployment rate in the study area. There is a sharp rise in the share of women's employment in total employment. Employment generated on activity basis revealed that total additional employment generated for the household over the first loan was highest in crop production which was followed by dairy cow rearing, fishing, small trade and rickshaw pulling. It is observed that the return to labour in rickshaw pulling was much higher in the current loan period in comparison to the first loan period. It is also observed that there is significant variations in employment and income of the beneficiaries through different activities in the study areas. The study recommends that export potential enterprises like vegetables, fish rearing, milk products, flowers, betal leaf etc. should be produced more in rural area.
