It is suggested that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may be sensitive to continuous exposure to high body temperatures of >104 degrees F. This observation is based on a review of a cohort of 1100 African patients with AIDS. The small number who developed malarial fever (Plasmodium vivax) of 104 degrees F or more, seemed clinically stable and their CD4 lymphocyte counts were rising or stable, not falling. It is suggested that the effect of high temperature on HIV needs to be evaluated.
