It is noted that about nine out of ten women in Egypt, Eritrea, Mali and northern Sudan have undergone some form of female circumcision, as have four of ten in Cote d'Ivoire and the Central African Republic. The data come from DHS surveys conducted between 1989 and 1996 in these countries and Yemen. Questions were added to the standard DHS questionnaire to collect information on the prevalence of female circumcision, which includes three basic types of genital cutting. Issues discussed are: prevalence and practice; attitudes; trends; and circumcision of daughters.
