Experimental infection of chicks with Enterococcus hirae

To determine the pathogenicity of E. hirae for chicks, 18-hour-old cultures of strain 693 and 2280 which were isolated from the brains of chicks with nervous signs and grown in trypticase soy broth were inoculated into 4 groups each of 16 four-day-old chicks. Chicks were inoculated intravenously or intratracheally with the strains; 2 control groups (10 chicks each) were inoculated intratracheally or intravenously with trypticase soy broth. All groups were watched daily for 7 days. Clinical signs did not develop and mortality did not occur in any of the treatment or control groups. It is suggested that in natural infection predisposing factors may play a role in establishing the infection.
