A role for Brachiaria decumbens in hepatogenous photosensitization of ruminants?

The authors suggest that photosensitization is caused by saponins in B. decumbens and not by sporidesmin produced by infestations of Pithomyces chartarum since production of the mycotoxin has not been reported for American strains of this fungus. They suggest that photosensitization may be exacerbated by sporidesmin in much the same way as with other saponin producing plants.
