A survey among nomadic Babinga pygmies in the area of rain forest in the Southern territory of the Central African Republic showed 24% of 299 to have nematode eggs in the faeces, probably of Strongyloides sp. Of 400 non-pygmies in the same forest zone, 12% had identical eggs. Adults cultivated from eggs were identified as S. fuelleborni. Further coprological examinations for this parasite were negative in Togo and Dahomey, but among pygmy populations in Southern Cameroon and in the Kaffa population of the Bouga district in Ethiopia, the nematode was detected in from 4 to 78% of subjects. It appears that S. fuelleborni is not an accidental parasite of man as formerly believed.
