Neutralizing antibody in serum and nasal secretions of calves exposed to parainfluenza-3 virus

Virus-neutralizing antibody was determined in the serum and nasal secretion of calves after they were exposed to aerosols of parainfluenza-3 virus or to virus administered by i/m inoculation. Exposure by either route resulted in primary and secondary serum antibody responses. However, exposure to virus by aerosol resulted in higher nasal secretion antibody titres in the presence of comparable serum antibody titres than did exposure by inoculation. After the initial respiratory exposure, the antibody in the nasal secretion varied from the serum antibody level, but was increased and persisted at a greater level after re-exposure.
