On the occupational mobility of rural households: the case of India

Occupational mobility in rural households in India is analyzed with regard to main occupation. The data were collected from 1,364 households in the rural areas of Varanasi during 1969 and 1979. By means of the simple time homogeneous Markov chain mathematical model the authors analyze overall occupational mobility of households with regard to their predicted equilibrium structure, the length of time in one occupation, and the hypothesis of perfect mobility.
