A summary of a workshop entitled "Alcohol and Calories: A Matter of Balance," that was held on January 27, 1993. The workshop was organized by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and was cosponsored by several federal organizations. The workshop evaluated the evidence of alcohol's effects on human metabolism and suggested experimental approaches to resolving some of the paradoxes surrounding the nutritional role of alcohol. The possibility that the alcohol might participate in energy compensation and that its intake might be controlled by a set-point mechanism was examined. The contribution of ingested alcohol to body mass and body heat was discussed as was the fate of the energy consumed as alcohol. Evidence to explain the mechanism of the impaired thermal regulation following alcohol ingestion was also considered. .
