The development of farm structure, agricultural production and the planning and organization of agriculture up to 1977 is described against the background of the agricultural policy principles of the United Socialist Party of the GDR. The operating principles and the agricultural and social policy implications of the new forms of organization (specialized APCs, state farms and agro-industrial complexes) are dealt with. Finally development in the GDR's agriculture is compared with that of the Soviet Union and the applicability of GDR agricultural policy in developing countries is discussed.
