Empirical research based on a few village studies and relating to rural-rural migration in Bangladesh is reported. Types of migrant are identified and a comparison of village data is attempted. Problems and questions which need to be clarified are outlined. These include (1) To what degree is the rural-rural labour migration of village poor permanent in nature rather than seasonal? (2) What are the characteristics of these "drifting people" in the countryside of Bangladesh? (3) To what degree is the rural-urban migration of the richer villagers permanent in nature? (4) How far does in- and out-migration of poor migrant labourers occur at one and the same time in one and the same village? (5) What are exactly the conditions (labour market, man-land ratio, etc.) under which the village poor migrate?.
