Mefloquine prophylaxis (500 mg every other week) was given to 39 members of a medical team working in an area near the border between Thailand and Kampuchea, and was continued for 2 months after return to France. 2 workers developed Plasmodium falciparum malaria after their return; in one patient there was also a failure of mefloquine treatment (1.5 g in 16 h) and the infection was successfully cured with naphthyridine. It is considered that mefloquine is the best drug for individual chemoprophylaxis in this area of South East Asia where drug resistance to other antimalarials is common, but that some strains of P. falciparum already show resistance to mefloquine.
