Porcine proliferative enteropathy

Porcine proliferative enteropathy is a very widespread disease of the growing and fattening pig. It regroups a set of clinical manifestations which have different macroscopic appearances. However, all cases show the same lesion namely cellular proliferation and intestinal epithelial immaturity. Macroscopically there is a thickening of the mucosa in the small intestine and sometimes in the large intestine. When there are no complications superimposed on the initial lesion, such as necrotic enteritis and regional ileitis the disease is called porcine intestinal adenomatosis, otherwise it is called hemorrhagic enteropathy. The disease is due to an intracellular pathogen similar to the Campylobacter bacteria : Ileobacter intracellularis which can at the present time only be shown by direct coloration of a mucosal smear using a modified Ziehl Neelson method or by immunofluorescence.
